Well, in infant and junior school(from starting school till aged 11) uniform wasn't very strict but once you get to secondary school it's horrible -.- But the teachers focus more on the younger students so once you get into year 10 they tend to just not bother since they've been trying for 3 years already xD

Starting school(nersary which I think is like kindergarten) to year 2(about 7). That's infant school, but a lot of schools now have infant and junior in 1.

Americans have elementary school (kindergarten and preschool are often included in this), middle or junior high school, high school, and then college/university.
I would list the years, but it varies on the region.
Here in my part of Florida, elementary is K5/kindergarten (or K3/preschool, depending on the school) through year 5. Middle is years 6—8. And high is 9—12. I'm in 12th grade.

I remember this girl from Ireland who had to wear uniforms before she moved to the US. And we were in first grade at the time, so we all thought it was really cool.

Here, there's kindegarten and then you have first through four grade (6-10 years) as elementary school, fifth through eighth as middle school (10-14 years), and ninth through twelth (14-18 years) as high school. Two years of preschool (before kindegarten) is technically optional and everyone had to pay when I went to preschool, but nowadays it's part of the public school system, so I think most if not all the kids go.

Here, K-5 is Elementary. Grades 6-8 is Middle, and 9-12 is High. I am also in 12th.

(SN: I forgot to mention this, but yesterday, I had to grade someone's paper.... People who write in text message language in English class really does grind my gears. Yet people think we should drop English as a credit..... -__- *Flips table over in angst*)

*joins Dani in the table flipping* English is very important! Sorry, it just bugs me when people think that their own language shouldn't be used ^.^ I have no idea what a 'credit' is though.

I see, I guess that's not too different from ours, you just call them grades, we call them years and your school system varies on region O.o ...gotta remember just how big America is xD

Re: School

Post by aelitaxwilliam on Wed Oct 03, 2012 3:08 pm

It's actually weird, because I used to live in a town that my current town borders, and they had the 1-5 as their elementary school. You wouldn't think it would change so much across a town's border line. o.o

Credits are basically representations of the classes you've taken that are put on your transcript (I'm not sure if you guys have transcripts since a quick Google search was kind of conflicting, but transcripts are basically records of your grades in high school that you send to colleges that you're applying to). You need a certain amount of credits to graduate high school and you also need certain types of credits to graduate. Like, in most high schools you need to take four yearlong English classes which translates to four credits at my high school (though I know other schools that award two credits for a yearlong course or three or something like that...which makes it so that they need more credits to graduate since they earn more credits per course). Of course, you need to successfully complete your class to get the credit, but it's only getting a D or higher, I think? Or it might be a C. Thankfully, I've never not gotten a credit, and I'll be glad to have it stsay that way!

Re: School

In college/university here, credits are measured by how many hours a week you spend in the class. I'm not sure if the same is true for high schools or whatever. I do know that if you only complete half of a class here, you earn half a credit, so you can potentially graduate with xx.5 credits.

Last year, Florida added Algebra 2 to the list of math credits required to graduate, and my Calculus teacher (who also taught Algebra 2) suddenly had a huge influx of senior students who didn't give a crap about math in her class. They cheated a lot too, so she started doing things like giving them different tests and not returning them until everybody had taken it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure colleges are different. At least my high school is different than the local college here? (the credits that I got for my summer course were sort of weird to transfer)

We have three required math credits rather than requiring people get to a higher level. This gets you up to Algebra II, but the counsellors really strongly encourage people to do a math class senior year too. And that's smart of your teacher. Fail or do your work, heh. It's so hard to get away with cheating here. Not that I actually cheat, but I've entertained the thought when I'm freaking out over a test that I forgot about ("is there any way I can get an A on this?" "maybe even a B?" "is there any way to make it so i don't fail?!")...desperate times, yo. Thankfully, I've only forgot about a (hard) test like once or twice, and I've been able to study in class anyway.

In Florida, you're required to have four math credits at Algebra 1 and higher level. And now three of them are required to be Algebra 1, Geometry, and now Algebra 2. The fourth one could be something as simple as Math for College Readiness (basically an algebra 2 review) to AP Statistics (trig is a prerequisite for AP Calc, so you can't do that).
Unless I take Calculus 3 at the college next term, I will graduate with seven math credits.

Oh, and graduation this year is the day after my 18th birthday. Very Happy

Yeah, ours got pushed forward this year after a several-year trend of being pushed back.

Report cards came in today. A's in both of my block-schedule classes, A in my dual enrollment class, B in my traditional-schedule class (meaning this class got a progress report grade).

I remember when my school would hand out actual report cards instead of printing off a piece of paper and passing those out to students.

SNICKIEEEE, you're insane. I'm going to have four math credits by the time I'm done with high school, and that is good enough for me. Technically I could do stats my senior year, but since math isn't my best subject, I think I'll stick to calc and just have one math credit.

I'm so excited for next week, because we have NECAPs which means that my teachers aren't allowed to assign more than twenty minutes of homework each night and they're not allowed to start any new material or assign big projects due directly after NECAPs. I also don't have to go to my last class if I don't want to, which is making me even more excited!!

AW YEAH FOR SATURDAY

Oh jeez. I attempted to tutor a girl in math the other day, and she's really bad at it. Like 'thinks the number 1,343 is close to 0 because it has a 1 in it and 1 is close to 0' bad.
