What is everyone's opinions on advanced (and remedial) classes?
Like Enzo said, we don't really have classes split like that in the UK and it kinda varies from school to school as to how they treat students when it comes to this. We have classes split into ability groups, but there are things like GMAT and stuff for "gifted/more talented" students, which involve doing higher level work nd going on trips and entering these coompetitions with other shcools. I think we're going on a trip to Oxford next year.

Do you think they're helpful for the student to be able to interact with kids their own age with a similar level of intelligence?
Yea, I tihnk it's good for people to interact with others of a similar intelligence level.

Do you think everyone within a certain age range should be in the same classes regardless of intelligence level?
No, just look at my answer to the first one, kids of the same age are in classes, but it's based on ability in that subject.

Should there be a minimum national standard on what a student must learn and master before they can graduate?
There's already an invisible standard there anyway, it may not be for when you graduate, but if you don't do well then the rest of your life could be damamged too. There's a standard employers set for potential employees.

What is your opinion on standardized testing and the effects it has on a student's schooling?
BLAH I fail to understand how putting ridiculous amounts of pressure on students is going to prove their intelligence. How cramming 200+ students into a hot, non-air conditioned sports hall in the middle of May/June/July and forcing them to be in silence as they fill out a paper that will determine the rest of their life, is doing anything other than mentally torturing them. Ok, so a bit extreme there, but I do think that it's stupid that so much of your final grade is based on how well you do in these few exams, that are mushed together with equally as important exams from other subjects, all of which you have to revise for. There's a huge amount of stress put on students to do well, especially soncdiering how expensive higher education is.

Should school be mandatory?
Eductaion should be mandatory, it doesn't have to be through school.

They did something similar to me in 7th grade. Not exactly the lowest level, but still, I didn't belong there. (I'm sure it was because one of my 6th grade teachers hated both me and my dad.)

What is everyone's opinions on advanced (and remedial) classes?
I think it's good to have these different levels so that students have an oppurtunity to be taught at the right pace for them, though I think being placed in a remedial class based solely on standardized testing is a bit absurd.

Do you think they're helpful for the student to be able to interact with kids their own age with a similar level of intelligence?
Yes, I'd say so. It's certainly easier for students to get along if they have more in common.

Do you think students should be allowed to skip grades instead of being placed in advanced classes?
I'm not sure. I know at least with me I find some things quite easy, while other things are a bit harder for me, so skipping a grade because I'm really good in one area could hurt me in another area. I can't say grade levels matter too much in my high school though, since it's common to have mixed grade level classes for certian subjects.

Do you think everyone within a certain age range should be in the same classes regardless of intelligence level?
No, I think that by trying to accomodate those on the lower end of the spectrum, too much time is lost for those on the high end of the spectrum who can learn things much faster, and could use a quicker class pace (lest they get bored).

Should there be a minimum national standard on what a student must learn and master before they can graduate?
I think that would be a great thing, but let's face it- some people never would graduate if that was the case.

What is your opinion on standardized testing and the effects it has on a student's schooling?
Tests usually end up being a big waste of time. They interrupt learning for weeks at a time, during which most people finish an hour or so early, and sit around playing games and such. Plus, there will never be a time when everyone passes, since some people just don't care enough.

Should school be mandatory?
I personally hate some aspects of school. School isn't a bad thing, but the way it is now, I wouldn't go to half my classes if it wasn't required of me.

In middle school, the normal classes felt like remedial classes to me. I guess you always have to cater to the slowest students, but it was frustrating for 95% of the other kids. So, if you're going to make normal classes that slow, I feel like you should have an advanced class or two then?

If they want to skip a grade and if their parents are okay with it, why not.

I'd say that unless there are exceptional circumstances, you should be within the age range of two-three years.

Yes. People need to be able to do basic math (I'd say up to Algebra 2, though Trig/Pre-Calc would be ideal) and be able to read and write. That's not negotiable...?! If you can't read and write properly, then I feel like it's like, good luck getting a decent job then.

I don't agree with it, because I feel like some of the material isn't relevant to what schools are teaching. On our science NECAPs this year, there was some stuff I hadn't even learned because my school didn't require it, and though there was some background information, it was made a lot harder because I hadn't taken a couple classes. On the other hand, with advanced placement exams, I think my chem teacher put it best: this is stuff that you need to know at the end of a college chem course anyway, and it's not unfair to ask you to memorise and learn these definitions and concepts.

Yes! There's a lot of stupid stuff on Tumblr like "omg i've learned more on tumblr than at school!!11!" and that bugs me so much because of how uninformed the statement is? At school, you do learn to think analytically and critically. You're taught to analyse information and use it to support thesis statements in essays. You're taught how to write, read, and do math. You learn the history of your country and other countries, and you study physics, chemistry, and biology. Theoretically, you're supposed to learn enough to be able to go on to college and succeed there. It's not that I like school, and tbh I'm already dreading all the homework, but I think it is useful and necessary. I should say, I wouldn't object to different forms of learning such as more hands-on learning or field trips or even online courses/designing your own learning. I'd support maybe a freer and more extensive curriculum in high school and maybe eighth grade (as a transition year), but there are a ton of building blocks in the earlier years that are really important for later on in life.

My school sorta has advanced classes. I like them sorta. What happens is that advanced students are placed in a grade or to above what they would normally be in. For example I was learning math with Juniors when I was a Freshman and with seniors last year.

It's good to be able to learn at my skill level but it is really hard to socialize. Of course class isn't to socialize but still.

In other news my AP calculus summer work is starting to finally make sense. It is really boring but at least I finally get it.

In bio, I know we have a test the second week of school, but it's a review on chemistry, so I should be fine.

Ahhh, but I just don't want school to start. I don't like waking up earlier than 9.

Haha, I've seen all the friends that I want to see over the summer. I'd rather continue seeing them outside of school rather than in class. Razz

I'm kind of excited for Physics though, because a whole group of us got into the same class, lmao.

Aww ;~; I'm around the age where most people are driving (and I actually should be, since I have a car, but I'm just too much of a procrastinator/chicken to take my test), so even though my state's a bit spread out, it works out. And I snapchat a lot, haha. Not really a substitute for hanging out with someone, but still fun.

That's nice that you get to see your girlfriend over the summer! Do you know if you guys are sharing any classes this year?

Yeah, it's only one year, but one year can mean a lot in terms of classes. One of my friends and I were trying to see if we could rearrange our schedules, but we're in different math levels and language levels and history levels, and those are all classes we need to take/can't drop, so there was barely anything we could do to change our schedules.

Good luck getting your license!! My advice really is to get someone who's not easily nervous. My dad made me so nervous when I first started learning that that I had a hard time getting a grasp of driving. It was my driving teacher that really helped me learn and this is so off-topic so I'll stop now

My mom is a great driving teacher, she always stays calm while i'm learning, my dad just sits there and yells as loud as possible if i accidently clip a curb while parrallel parking even though i've never done it before.

Yeah, last year the only time i got to see her inside school was in the mornings, after school let out, and during class changes (i'd walk her to every class no matter how far out of my way it was)

Aww, that's so sweet. Smile Considering class changes can take a few minutes, at least you guys do have a few minutes between each class. I hope you guys at least get lunch, if not a class, together this year!

I don't know how your lunch works, but we have four lunches, thirty minutes each, and your class gets assigned one depending on which class you're in (like, all history classes go at a certain lunch and all languages classes do, the freshman houses are assigned a certain lunch each, etc).

GCSE's are linear, you have 2 years of work and then exams at the end of it.

A levels, mostly, aren't like this, but the government because they are so quit being a pottymouth smart and want to make our educations as stressful and nu uh none of that as possible are trying to make A levels linear as well and basing MORE of your final grade off of the exam instead of the course work.

I AM DONE.
