Which spellings of character names do you prefer when there's room for variation?

I feel like I'm the only one here who writes Jérémie with the accents. XD and I prefer Antea to Anthea. I can't decide whether it should be 'Herb' or 'Hervé' though.

I have the accents for Jérémie and Hervé and stuff, but I'm too lazy to use them.
Accents aside, I use Jeremie, Herve, and Antea.
Antea is still confusing, though. I've heard that in the French version they say "Antea" and Aelita says "Anthea" in episode 90. I'm really not sure, but I usually go with Antea.

Jeremie and Herve(with accents when I can remember XD) I find it hard to read something when it's written as Herb, it just sounds weird to me :L

When I was way younger, I thought that his name was genuinely Herb. You guys can imagine my surprise when I found out that it was actually Herve. :D But yeah, I use Herve and Jeremie. I'm too lazy to put on the accents even though I know they're there. And like Snickie, I use Antea. I've never seen it spelled Anthea — perhaps because of me not reading an extreme amount of CL fanfiction — so I think this is a case where FFN has rubbed off on me. I also think it was the first spelling I ever saw of her name, so it's stuck.

I think there's actually a thing about Herve, like it could also be Herve. Herve just looks more like a name to me.

As for Jeremy vs. Jeremie vs. Jeremiewithaccents, I used to be a firm Jeremy believer. But, I"ve been growing out of that. I do occasionally do Jeremiewithaccents, but that's only when I'm trying to give the story a more French vibe.

Herve was a weird one, his name was changed to Herb in the English dub. You can really hear the B sound on the end of his name.

I use Herve, Jeremie and Anthea (pronounced an-tay-ah because French). Also Maïa for Aelita's original name given to her by Jeremie. I only really use accents like Hervé, Jérémie and Anthéa when writing fanfiction, but Maïa I always use.

I love sticking to the French-ness mainly. Oh, and Yolande instead of Yolanda too :D

I said that I prefer Jeremie, but reading an old fic of mine I realised that I used to put Jeremy, but I think that was back when I only really knew about the dub and didn't look into the fact that it was French.

Well, I used to spell Jeremy with a Y... But then I started to notice how other people spelt it, and so then I changed it to the french version. So now I spell it like Jeremie. Without the accents, though. I'm too lazy to put those in... And I also spell Herve the french way because...I just do, okay? Every time someone writes Herb down I just think of the spice. Herve sounds better...

I'm torn. English-speakers tend to use Naomi because that's more phonetically correct than Noémie, but Noémie just looks so much more gorgeous, plus I think that's how the French spell it.

Yeah, her name is spelt Noémie in the French version. Pronounced differently too, they switch the vowel sounds around to make it no-ay-me rather than nay-o-me. I don't really pay that much attention to her and hadn't seen any French episodes with her in it so was unaware of the spelling change, so I've always used Naomi.

I didn't even know it was spelled and pronounced differently in French, so I've always used Naomi. I really like Noémie though so I may start using that.

It's written as Noémie in the trobinoscope and the French episode pronounced it as "no-emmy". Was the name pronounced like "nay-oh-mie" in the English episode? I've never seen that episode in English, but I'm guessing so since she was introduced in let's-Americanize-minor-characters Season 1.

The thing about Jeremy's name is that it was spelled Jeremy in Season 1 (figures), then all subsequent seasons used Jeremie. I'm not writing fanfics in French anytime soon so I tend to leave off the accents unless it's a name that doesn't have a standard pronunciation in English or would be unusual for the target audience. (Like Noémie above.)

Antea and Anthea are both pronounced the same in French, because French doesn't have the "th" (θ) sound like the original Greek root. If the name is spelled Antea, then the French pronunciation is correct. If the name is spelled Anthea, then both the French pronunciation and English (with "th" sound) is correct. We'd have to get our hands on the script Razz

Other way around actually. They changed it to Jeremy in season 2 because the spelling was more common internationally, and they were beginning to get a wide international audience.

As proof here's the scene change thingies:
Spoiler:

There are a lot of characters that have Anglicised names, and while it may seem bad, every other dub does it as well. Heck, Chinese didn't even keep their original names at all, even for Yumi. Place names were changed as well, like the streets Ulrich listed to Jeremie in Log Book. It's all just to familiarise the audience with the dialogue, I mean, can you imagine if they had kept the name pronounced as Noémie? It's a show aimed at 12-year-olds, hardly anyone would realise it was meant to be French, so why bother making it difficult for audiences when there's already an English version of that name?

I honestly can't be angry at them for doing any of it, except for Jeremie because they spelt it like that in English in season 1, whereas the others were spelt differently from the start. It'd be nice having the French stick, but for an audience of kids? Not a great idea. I mean yeah you can see the French stuff in the animation if you know what you're looking for, but it shouldn't be kept in the dialogue.

That's interesting to know. I can see where the confusion comes from though, because the official website (at the time of Season 1) did change Jeremie's name to Jeremy in its English writeup.

English:
French:

A_QueenOfFairys wrote:Heck, Chinese didn't even keep their original names at all, even for Yumi.
It depends on which version you watch--one version tried to keep their tones and names as close as possible at the expense of having them sound really weird, and the other name just straight up made them up to be more Chinese. Like the Hong Kong version became "Yóu Měi" and the mainland version became "Yóu Huì Zǐ ". There are also some English names that have official Chinese counterparts, like "William" = "Wēi Lián" and "Yuē Hàn" for "Johnny". And then there was Ulrich's name that can't translate well at all, so the Hong Kong version changed his name to "Zhì Láng" which has the same meaning as "Ulrich", which is "wolf ruler", while the mainland version changed it to some other common name.

I'll always spell it Jeremie. But the accents are too hard to get, so I never add them. For me, it'll always be Herb. That's how I'll always see him. I don't care much for the Herve stuff, or whatever his name's supposed to be. XP

Hold down Alt Gr when you press 'e', for the accents. Easy Wink

Queen makes a good point, but on the other hand, I think it's worse in a way that they Americanised the show so much when it really is obviously set in France. (Using of Euros, the satellite being aimed at France, that kind of thing.) I don't think it could have hurt too much to use the regular names.

English:
French:
True, though they changed a lot between those two versions. Even if you can't speak French there's obvious differences between those two passages in both size and format. Maybe the English version came later (since it got dubbed a year after or something?) and they decided to change it then. Unless this was the season 3 website and not the Antefilms one that stayed active until the end of season 2, then I wouldn't know.

Oh, and I also have the first two novels in French, and the books with the green spines based on the episodes. Both have his name spelt Jérémy or Jeremy, the one without accents is the novel which is probably because it was written by a non-Moonscoop person.

And I use accents a lot because of French class and stuff. We had keyboard shortcuts written on this piece of paper for us. é = ctrl + ' + e. Though I just use alt codes, they're easier for me. Alt + 0233 (on the number pad) is é. And then if you're really lazy you can have autocorrect fix it for you, hehe.

I downloaded a Spanish keyboard for Spanish class so that I wouldn't have to rely on Autocorrect and since I don't have a number keypad on my laptop which makes Alt codes absolutely useless for me. So I use it for the accents.
