"What's that, Jeremie?"
"It's a camera, Aelita. It's fairly cheap. Do you want to buy it?"
"What's a camera?"
"It lets you take pictures, Aelita. Like a screenshot, only better."
"...Like a photo booth?"
"Yes, Aelita. Just like a photo booth."
"I'll buy it!"

Later, all of the gang were in Jeremie's room.
"Everyone ready?" she asked. They all nodded.
"Then smile!"
She set the timer, ran into the centre, and beamed.
There was a flash. The camera beeped. She ran back to look at the screen.
Aelita took many more photos, but that first one was forever her favourite.

Every time he tries to draw her, he fails. Even in class, once he turns his sight from her to portray her expression, next time it is completely different. It morphs constantly to the mysterious rhythm of her inner mood swings. She is bored, but she is not completely; once she shows hints of approval, then something disgusts her; when Ms Hertz asks her, she stares at her, dumbstruck, then shows signs of annoyance.
Finally, Odd sees his chance and smiles. She fell asleep and the chameleon-like mask of her faces fell. Discreetly, he makes fast strokes on the paper.

“Picture this,” says Aelita as she stands behind Odd, facing away from him. “Our gang on the beach Oh, and include William and Sissi as well, if it’s not too much trouble!”

The blonde piky-head nods as his pen rushes over the once blank paper in front of him. Soon, many colors form a setting sun, lots of water, a cozy beach and more.

“Don’t forget some birds, and Jeremie and me should be on the background, feeding fishies. Can I look?” She turns around and glances over his shoulder, only to find… a picture of her kissing him. “Odd..!”

Who knew that a small shiny square of paper could carry so much meaning? That something so little could be so important to someone. The equation was key; such an awesomely unexpected find. Jeremie was so excited. But as Aelita sat and stared at the picture, she wasn’t drawn most to the oh-so-important equation in the background. She looked so happy and innocent, sitting on her father’s knee at his desk, his hand on her shoulder. It reminded her of just how different she was from her friends. They had families that loved them, but she only had this picture.

A thin moonbeam stretches into a darkened room while a figure slips in silently.

Quickly, it walks to a pile of boxes, and pulls out one. Going through the box, he or she seems to find whatever it is looking for.

A small piece of paper is pulled out. The paper lands underneath the moonlight and a photo of five smiling faces is easily recognizable. The figure stares for a long while.

Then, a baby's cries are heard from the end of the hall, and as quick as it came in, the figure is gone.

The photo is again lost.

William walks along the dark roads, mumbling in himself as his gaze is centered upon something only he can see. He kicks a small rock aside and shivers as a cold breeze pierces through his shirt. After a few minutes he reaches the bridge and the abandoned factory. At long last.

“Xana,” he whispers as if talking to a long-lost love. “It’s been a long time.. too long.” He steps into the elevator and descends, all the way down to the supercomputer room. “Let us be together again, one more time..” He steps closer to the machine, pulling the lever.

They all have them. Jim does too. And Yumi's parents. Anyone who has had the unfortunate duty to wake them up.

The scratches and bruises are clear against skin.

Because when they sleep, they don't go off into a peaceful world of dreams. They go to a world that mimcs their life. They toss and turn and they scream and they fight.

And when they wake up, they're as wild as animals and they haven't left their dreams fully. So they scream and they fight. And they punch and scratch.

No one knows why. It's their secret and their burden.

(Aelita's POV)
She always had that nightmare. When she was under the dark hold of XANA. Shadows filled every corner of her mind, every good thought exterminated by XANA. At that moment, she always knew how truly evil XANA’s intentions were. She couldn't think, she couldn't move on her own, she just wanted it to be all over.
Suddenly, she felt her life points decrease painfully. With a screech, XANA forcefully left her mind.
Aelita woke up in a cold sweat. Those were her two worst dreams from her past; being controlled by XANA, and her father dying in Lyoko.

Odd crouches low, cloaked in the shadows, his lithe body pressed against the cliff’s smooth side. His tail, its tip twitching the rhythm of a predator stalking his pray, is the only movement from the warrior. His eyes are trained on a distant point, where three figures stand—two armed with swords and one, a female with dark hair, holding twin steel fans. Odd’s gaze leaves them for a moment, finds Aelita’s teal orbs. A slight shake of her head, Next time it says, and Odd snarls, his eyes flashing with Xana’s mark before the pair disolves into the shadows.

It feels like my mind is splitting in half, her face, her voice, those memories, flickering through the dark fog like a beam of light from a lighthouse. I can’t think straight, I can’t obey but I can’t disobey either. My choice should be easy, should be clear cut, black and white. But it isn’t, and it hurts my head. Something in my head is tearing apart and I can’t stand it! The pain in my head and my heart match the pain I can see in her face, she wants this, but he doesn’t. I can’t. I just can’t.

On Kadic’s soccer pitch, Ulrich Stern dibbles the ball through a complex series of plays before kicking it into the goal, his teammates cheering around him.

In the library, Jeremy Belpois pours over a thick text as he prepares to take his college entrance exams three years early.

In the art room, Odd Dell Robbia grins to himself, painting the last brush stroke of his latest masterpiece.

Out on the courtyard bench, Yumi Ishiyama leans against her boyfriend, William Dunbar holding her gently.

In an abandoned factory, Milly and Tamia find an old computer, and, begin to power it up.

Sissi watched as her date, Odd Della Robbia moved through the dance floor. But her eyes were drawn to another figure, Ulrich Stern. He also moved slowly to the table with refreshments. But he seemed out of it, watching someone else. Yumi Ishiyama. But her eyes weren’t paying attention as she also moved towards the table.

Jeremy Belpois, who was already there, didn’t notice the three other figures walking towards him. He didn’t really care. They were four different people who had their own friends and who knew each other on pleasantries only.

The temperature in the room still dropped.

Here's mine for the prompt of Twelve. I call it Baker's Dozen.

Twelve, mused Xana. A perfect number. One less than thirteen, a so-called unlucky number. Also known as a dozen. And, most memorable of all, it was the exact number of super-monsters he had to unleash.
He would have made more, but they took up a lot of processing power. Still, twelve powerful monsters is a significant advantage. How could he lose now?
He sent them out, confident they would not fail.
He hunted down the Lyoko Warriors, confident twelve was enough.
He could taste his victory.
Unfortunately for him, he forgot exactly why bakers always prepare that one extra cake…

When he was little, and tucked away beneath a bed sheet tent with his teddy bear and flashlight, Jeremy read comic books. He poured over the brightly colored pages, eyes wide behind thick glasses that kept sliding down his nose, and idolized the powerful men and women, clad in brightly colored capes, who stopped all the bad guys from taking over the world.

And, when he was little, Jeremy decided that one day he would be a superhero too.

Of course, in his version he did more than sit behind a giant computer.

And he wasn’t only twelve years old.

“On the twelfth day of Winter’s Veil the devil gave to me: twelve laserbeams, eleven horny hornets, ten cocky crouches, nine mighty megatanks, eight midget mites, seven crawling krabes, six nifty spectres, fiiiive annoying traps!” The blonde gasps for breath and continues: “Four tarantulas, three blocky blocks and two bugs on my hard drive!”

“Wait, that’s not how the song goes,” Ulrich points out.

“Yeah, you’re supposed to go all the way until one! What’s the last gift?” Odd asks in curiosity.

“That doesn’t belong in this song. I got it from a pink-haired angel,” Jeremie replies with a smile.

Twelve is his favorite number. A simple number really, but so much is twelve. Twelve months in a year, twelve signs in the zodiac, twelve objects in a dozen, unless it’s a baker’s dozen because then there are thirteen so it doesn’t really count. Twelve years old when he found her. She was twelve also. Twelve when he got four of the best friends ever. Which is still twelve, one plus two is three, three times four is twelve. He was twelve when he started saving the world and when he first held her hand. So very much is twelve.

He didn't know where he was walking to, and he didn't really care. He didn't remember why he was walking; only that he was and he had to continue. Each step he took drained his already depleted energy supply further.

But he kept on walking.

There was a building in his line of vision. He would get there and then he would take a break. The distance which normally would have seemed like nothing, was now all too impossible.

But he kept on walking.

It wasn't enough. Twelve steps away from the building, Odd Della Robbia stopped fighting and slept.

Running more on adrenaline than sense, Ulrich sprinted after the spider-like monster ahead of him. He had to catch that monster before it escaped into the city. As the creature darted into a ventilation shaft, he stooped to pick up a broken length of pipe and ducked to the left, hoping to head it off before it could escape. As it reached the exit, Ulrich brought the pipe down on its ‘eye’, caving in the biomechanical horror’s fleshy abdomen like a rotten egg. Tossing the dripping pipe to the side, Ulrich fell to his knees to raggedly catch his breath.

Jeremy sat at the library table, eyes on his laptop as he typed. Beside him, Aelita worked on her English report, chewing the end of her pen. “Could I borrow some paper?” Theo asked the group. Yumi, continuing to read her textbook, handed him a few sheets.

And then somewhere a door slammed, and Ulrich appeared at their table, paint splattered and asking if they’d seen Odd.

“…We’re in the library,” Jeremy responded flatly. Ulrich nodded his understanding, and then hurried away again. Everyone returned to work for a few silent minutes, before Jeremy sighed contentedly.

“Happy April First, everyone.”

William’s outdone himself this time, Yumi thought bitterly, hurling a fan. It hit one Tarantula dead on, exploding it into fragments of data, but there were more waiting: she was trapped. Nearby, Odd and Ulrich weren’t faring much better, trying to duck around the surrounding monsters but getting cut off again and again. They couldn’t reach Aelita.

Helplessly, Yumi watched William get further toward the cliff’s edge with her unconscious friend, preparing to throw her into the Digital Sea.

“Someone!” she screamed, looking for a way out, any way out. “Catch that—”

The blast caught her between the eyes.

Jeremy’s POV:

“Guys, our little jelly fish friend has Alita!” I said. “Somebody, catch that monster!”

“Well, that explains the welcoming committee…” Ulrick said.

“We need vehicles, Jeremy.” Yumi said.

“I’m on it.”

“Hey Einstein, while you’re at it, can you give me a few more laser arrows?” Od asked.

“Right, sure thing, let me just…” The news monitoring program I made a long time ago popped up. Oh great, something about major flooding near the school…

“That’s just what we need…” I said. “Guys, you have to get Alita!”

“Vehicles, Jeremy!”

“Sorry.”

Funny, they think Lyoko is really tough…

The blok had been a mutant, they later decided.

It hadn’t even been a mission; they had just decided to look around for a bit. While walking, it had meandered over to them, probably after getting lost on the way to the previous attack.

Odd’s laser had missed. Ulrich and Yumi went after it, but they both bumped into each other, devirtualizing one another. While Odd was distracted, the blok pushed him over the edge and he had to be devirtualized by Jeremy. Aelita, seeing the situation, desperately ran into the nearest tower where Jeremy pulled her back to Earth.

In all fairness, Sissi’s popularity hadn’t been in her own imagination. Not at first.

She was pretty; she knew how to dress, knew how to make the boys stutter even in sixth grade. She was envied for her father’s position, for her clothes and her poise and her charms. But she only had eyes for Ulrich and the secret his friends were guarding.

And after a certain point, that obsession replaced whatever standing she’d had. The girls thought her annoying, the boys found her intimidating, and Sissi was too caught up in her mystery to notice that anything had changed.

Sissi knows that Ulrich likes her.

He didn’t at first, she knows, but she wasn’t one to give up without trying.

She doesn’t know what brought the change. There where days where she was more tired than usual and she did what she always did, yet they had acted different.

As time goes on, and they become more accepting of her, she isn’t sure if what she used to feel is still there. The group doesn’t keep secrets anymore, and Ulrich likes her, even if he hides it. But she doesn’t care.

Prizes are only worth the challenge they present.
